About the Program in Cognitive Affective Neuroscience (PICAN)

Goal:

Explore brain processes associated with cognitive and emotional information processing, and how to more precisely affect these mechanisms with treatments and societal change.

We examine mechanisms of cognition and emotion using techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), event-related potentials (ERPs), pupilometry, galvanic skin response (GSR), pulse rate, respiration rate, behavioral testing, and self-report measures. Computational neural network models are used to explore theoretical relationships between brain processes and experience. We develop new technologies and interventions to affect brains, psychological processes, and bodies. We work, especially, with people with emotional disorders and trauma backgrounds, and autistic people. We enthusiastically work to learn from, respect, and represent diversity in our research and research group. We are committed to working with, not at or on our research participants.
